Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement and the United Nations Forces Participants Day.
오늘은 6·25전쟁 정전협정 73주년이자 ‘유엔군 참전의 날’입니다.
Seventy-six years ago, nearly 1.95 million young men and women from 22 countries answered the call to defend a nation they scarcely knew, it was 'Korea'. It was the first collective military deployment under the banner of the United Nations.
76년 전, 세계 22개국 195만 청년이 이름조차 낯선 ‘코리아’로 달려왔습니다. 이는 유엔의 깃발 아래 첫 파병이었습니다.
Colonel Edward H. Forney, who led the Hungnam Evacuation Operation, once reflected on why he served:
흥남철수작전을 이끈 에드워드 포니 대령은 참전 이유를 이렇게 남겼습니다.
“As part of the of the United Nations Forces, I did the right thing for the right reason.”
“유엔군으로서, 옳은 이유로 옳은 행동을 했다.”
It was that noble conviction, 'the commitment to do what was right', helped save the Republic of Korea.
그 숭고한 ‘옳은 이유’가 대한민국을 구했습니다.
Amid the devastation of war, UN veterans did far more than fight. They built hospitals and orphanages, cared for civilians, and stood alongside the Korean people in their darkest hours. More than 37,000 of them made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home.
참전용사들은 총탄 속에서도 병원과 보육원을 세우며 우리 국민을 지켰습니다. 그 가운데 3만 7천여 명은 끝내 고국으로 돌아가지 못했습니다.
The seeds of hope they planted have borne remarkable fruit.
그들이 뿌린 희망의 씨앗은 결실을 보았습니다.
Rising from the ashes of war, the Republic of Korea achieved both rapid economic development and democratic transformation. Today, it stands among the world's leading economies and has become a global cultural powerhouse, which is an enduring example of the freedom and peace that those brave men and women fought to defend.
잿더미였던 대한민국은 산업화와 민주화를 동시에 달성하며, 세계 10위권의 경제강국이자 전 세계가 사랑하는 문화강국으로 도약했습니다. 목숨을 걸고 지키려 했던 평화와 자유의 모범국가가 되었습니다.
Many veterans now call Korea their "Second home." The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea will honor that trust and pride. We will fulfill our responsibility as a responsible middle power, working with the international community to advance peace, prosperity, and the values that unite us.
참전용사들은 오늘날 대한민국을 ‘제2의 조국’이라 부릅니다. 국회가 그 자부심에 답하겠습니다. 그 이름에 부끄럽지 않도록 국제사회의 평화와 번영을 이끄는 책임 있는 중추국가로서 책무를 다하겠습니다.
On this solemn occasion and United Nations Forces Participation Day, I pay my deepest tribute to the UN veterans who devoted themselves to the cause of freedom and peace. I also extend my heartfelt condolences and profound respect to the bereaved families whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.
자유와 평화를 위해 헌신하신 유엔 참전용사들의 영전에 경의를 표하며, 유가족 여러분께 진심 어린 위로와 존경의 마음을 전합니다.
